Sue Doughty slams empty promises on Childbirth Care

9.00.00am BST (GMT +0100) Tue 3rd Apr 2007

Responding to today's government announcement on more home births Sue Doughty said "This promise is nonsense in Guildford. The government is allowing the possible closure of facilities, including Maternity and Paediatrics in Guildford which are absolutely essential.

"We all want to see more choice for parents, and when it is safe to do, home births are the best choice for many mums, but hospital back will still be needed, especially for difficult births and emergencies. When problems happen expert help is needed urgently not only to save precious lives, but to prevent birth defects which can lead to disabilities."
